Project 2: Long Story Short

Statement

For this project, we were asked to create a 30-60 second animated type video for an audio clip of our choosing . The clip I chose is a scene from the movie Big Hero 6, where Hero discovers that Baymax is still active after stubbing his toe and screaming “ow.” I thought this was a great clip to portray a conversation between Hero, who is a human, and Baymax, who is a robot. My initial idea was to have Baymax’s voice portrayed as robotic and an old school web font and in a white colour. I wanted Hero’s voice portrayed as a bolded sans serif font in a purple colour, as he shows a lot of emotion when he gets hurt throughout the clip. This would be shown on a red/pink background. After the first critique, I changed the background colour to black to make it seem like an old computer screen as well as keeping both voices in white to give some similarity. I also changed the font weight for Hero’s voice to regular when he is speaking in a normal tone and then make it bold when he starts yelling in agony.

For the final critique, I changed the colour of Baymax’s font to a glowing green colour to further represent an old computer font, and changed Hero’s grunts to red to help show his pain. I also changed his grunts to appear in different spots on the screen instead of having the words just show up, to make it more dramatic.

In the end, I’m really happy for the way that the video turned out. It was my first real text animated video over an audio clip and I’m proud of myself for being able to produce it and I had a lot of fun creating it too.

Work Flow Sheet

Title of Project: Project 2: Long Story Short - “Discovery” - Big Hero 6

Length/Duration: 55 seconds (content) + 2 seconds of black + a 3-second slate

Aspect Ratio, Image/Frame Size, Pixel Aspect, Frame Rate etc.: 1920x1080, 24fps

Output: Quicktime movie, colour profile - HD (1-1-1), audio channels - stereo

Approach: I want to create a fun animated text video that goes in line with a clip from the film Big Hero 6. I want to use a combination of bold and thin texts to represent both voices in the clip.

Your Project Summary/Description: My idea is to create a text animation that goes in line with the scene in the film where Hero stubs his toe and Baymax arises from his case to help heal Hero. It is a funny scene with different voice tones that I can showcase through text. The main colours in the film are red, white and purple. I want to use a red background and have Hero’s voice, which is loud and crazy, to be purple, bold and big, and Baymax’s voice, which is soft and helpful, to be white, and petit.

Visual Elements: I want to use some visuals to help create the banging noises as well as to recreate the scale from 1-10 that Baymax uses to ask how to rate the pain.

Software/Hardware/Materials Requirements: Adobe After Effects; Audio from Walt Disney Animation Studios on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEeBXUUOBiI

Technical Research/Anticipated Problem Areas: The problem areas would be to try and recreate the scale without getting copyrighted and be able to have many layers for when the objects fall onto Hero and his constant “ow”’s and banging noises.
